What is a sugar glider?

THEY ARE A MARSUPIAL (POUCHED MAMMAL) NATIVE TO AUSTRALIA OR INDONESIA.  THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE UNITED STATES SINCE THE EARLY 90S.

How big are sugar gliders?

THEY ARE BETWEEN 8 - 16 IN LENGTH FROM TIP OF NOISE TO THE TIP OF THEIR TALE.  THE BEST WAY TO COMPARE A SIZE OF A GLIDER IS LARGER THAN A HAMSTER AND SMALLER THAT A GUINEA PIG.

What do sugar gliders eat?   [click here for more on feeding]

THEY EAT 35% FRUIT, 35% VEGETABLES, AND 30% SOURCE OF PROTEIN

What temperature do they need?

OUR GLIDERS ARE KEPT BETWEEN 68-80 DEGREES AT ALL TIMES.  THEY SHOULD NOT GET TOO COLD OR TOO HOT.

How do I bond with my glider?    [click here for more on bonding]

WHEN YOU FIRST BRING HOME YOUR GLIDER LET HIM OR HER ADAPT TO THEIR NEW SURROUNDINGS (AT LEAST 24 HOURS). DURING THE DAY USE A BONDING/CAGE POUCH SO YOU CAN REMOVE AND CARRY ALONG WITH YOU.  RUBBING AND TALKING TO THEM WHILE THEY SLEEP IN THE DAY REALLY HELPS.  TOWARD THE EVENING YOU CAN PUT THE LITTLE ONE IN BETWEEN YOUR T-SHIRT AND LONG SLEEVE SHIRT.  TIE THE BOTTOM OF THE SHIRT OR TUCK THE BOTTOM OF THE SHIRT INTO YOUR PANTS SO THE GLIDER CAN NOT RUN FROM UNDERNEATH THE SHIRT.  JUST WALK AROUND WITH THEM UNDER THE LONG SLEEVE SHIRT.  ANOTHER TIP IS TO WEAR AN OLD T-SHIRT AND CUT IT UP INTO LITTLE PIECES AND PUT INSIDE THE POUCH SO THE GLIDER CAN GET YOUR SMELL.

Do they bite or scratch?

THESE LITTLE GUYS CAN IF THEY ARE REALLY SCARED.  THEY DO NOT DO IT ON PURPOSE.  THEY CAN SCRATCH WHILE GRABBING FOR A TREAT FROM YOUR HANDS.

Are they messy or smelly?

YES/NO IF A GLIDER IS SCARED IT WILL LET OFF A SKINK ODOR BUT IT ONLY LAST A SHORT TIME.  GLIDERS CAN GIVE OFF A BAD ODOR BUT IT IS CAUSED FROM MALNUTRITION OR ILLNESS.  CAGE TRAYS SHOULD BE CLEANED DAILY.

What sounds do they make?

SUGAR GLIDERS MAKE SEVERAL DIFFERENT NOISES.  SOME NOISES CAN BE REALLY CUTE (LIKE THE CHATTERING NOISE), SOME CAN BE REAL SCARY (CRABBING), AND SOME CAN BE ANNOYING (BARKING) ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY DO IT AT 3 IN THE MORNING.

How long do they live?

THEY CAN LIVE IN CAPTIVITY 10-18 YEARS WITH PROPER CARE AND DIET.

How often and when can I play or handle them?

IT IS BETTER TO PLAY WITH THEM IN THE EVENING TIME.  THEY CAN PLAY AT DIFFERENT TIMES DURING THE DAY BUT IN SHORT INCREMENTS.

What are the costs of ownership?

SUGAR GLIDERS PRICE RANGE FROM $150.00 - $500.00.  THE SPECIAL COLORS CAN BE IN THE HIGHER RANGE.  THESE LITTLE GUYS CAN BE A NICE LITTLE INVESTMENT.  SO PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF AND MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT THESE GUYS ARE ALL ABOUT.

What are the housing requirements?

THE MINIMUM CAGE THAT SHOULD BE USED FOR ONE SUGAR GLIDER IS 18X18X24.  WE PERSONALLY USE THE PVC COATED AND POWDER COATED CAGES.  BAR SPACING ID NO MORE THAN 1/2 WIDE.

Where should I buy my glider?

ANY USDA BREEDER IS THE BEST WAY TO GO.  PET STORES ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND YOU DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHERE THEY GOT THEIR GLIDER FROM.

Do they need veterinary care?

THEY DO NOT NEED VETERINARY CARE.  BUT YOU DO NEED AN EXOTIC VETERINARIAN ON STANDBY JUST FOR EMERGENCYS.

What do I need to do on a daily basis to maintain?

CHANGE THEIR TRAP NEWSPAPER, FEED IN THE EVENING AND KEEP GLIDER CEREAL AT ALL TIMES IN THE CAGE, CHANGE WATER DAILY AND LOTS AND LOTS OF LOVE.

What do I need to do on a monthly or bi monthly basis?

CUT OR TRIM NAILS, WASH CAGE DOWN WITH WARM WATER AND BAKING SODA, AND CHANGES POUCHES WEEKLY.

Should I get a male, neutered male or female Glider?

THIS IS THE QUESTION FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL.  EACH GLIDER HAS THEIR OWN PERSONALITY.  WE PERSONALLY FIND THAT THE NEUTERED MALES ARE SUPER SWEET AND GREAT AS A PAL.

What might be dangerous to my glider?

REGULAR HOUSEPLANTS, ELECTRICAL CORDS, WIRES, AND OTHER HOUSEHOLD PETS.
